Race
Did you know that the term BAME is now not used to refer to minority people in the UK? BAME or BME was found to be unhelpful as this can disguise huge differences in outcomes between ethnic groups. Hence, since December 2021, with Guidance from Government, the term “minorities” is now the correct term. While “ minorities” is generally perceived to mean “non-white” or anyone of a different colour, origin, or culture, it includes white minorities, such as Gypsy, Roma and Irish Traveller groups.
Writing about ethnicity
How we write about ethnicity, including our definition of ethnic minorities, words and phrases we use and avoid, and why we don’t use BAME or BME
